The No ‘poo Method of Hair-washing: Day One December 17, 2010

I have really oily hair. It doesn’t matter what shampoo/conditioner I use, if I use conditioner at all, or how many times I lather, rinse and repeat… by the end of the day, my hair is oily in the front and I’ve usually pulled it into a ponytail or thrown it into a bun as to not openly share that fact with the world.

Recently, within the past 2 weeks, my scalp has also been itchy and flaky for the first time in my life. Huge flakes all over my head for all to see. My head was itchy all day long. I decided it was time to change what I was doing, yet I am not willing to pour dandruff and dry scalp chemicals on my head- regular shampoo/conditioner chemicals are bad enough.

I heard about the No ‘poo method of  cleansing your hair some time ago and I thought it was a little radical and I was very skeptical to even try it. How in the world was baking soda and water going to clean my hair when shampoo- suds and all- wouldn’t even do the trick? I needed something STRONGER, not weaker… right?

I saw a video on the Internet and it sounded easy. I had the ingredients right in my cupboard. I really had nothing to lose. So, I went for it. I mixed 1 TBS of Baking Soda with 1 cup of water into an old shampoo bottle. I then brought the apple cider into the shower with me (I was a little hasty and didn’t watch the whole video… it’s supposed to be diluted! lol) and poured that straight onto my scalp. I absolutely HATE the smell of vinegar, and I know I’m not alone in this. But the video promised that once you rinsed it out, it would not smell of vinegar.

So I shook up my no ‘poo mix and poured it onto my head. It just felt like cold water. I rubbed it all over my scalp and into my hair. It felt so good on my itchy scalp, but actually made it itch more at first. I let it sit for a minute and I rinsed. Then, it was time for the vinegar. I really wish I would have watched the whole video to see that you mix it with water! But instead, I poured it straight onto my head. It burned my sensitive scalp, but not in a painful way. It was VERY relieving. I let that sit for a minute also, and rinsed. Very, very well.

When I got out of the shower, I had my Husband smell my hair and he said it smelled like apple cider, not vinegar. I couldn’t smell vinegar either, and could hardly smell anything at all. If only the apple cider scent of the vinegar can be smelled after being applied undiluted (and it was a faint scent at that), then I’m sure it’s pretty much scent-less when diluted.

I blow-dried my hair afterwards (I had somewhere to be, otherwise I don’t usually blow-dry).  It was super soft when I brushed through it wet. It was clean and shiny after blowdrying it and brushing through/styling it. Stayed looking clean ALL DAY LONG. This morning,  it still was not oily. I have not itched my scalp since! I haven’t hopped back into the shower today yet, so we’ll see what it does to my hair over the coming weeks. So far, so good!

It’s easy nowadays to forget to take care of our bodies and our minds. Modern day society is filled with junk for food, crap for water and enough mind-numbing television to last 100 lifetimes. The typical western view of life is we think we’re healthy as long as we aren’t sick… but being healthy is so much more than that. Being healthy is a feeling that all parts of your being- physically, emotionally, spiritually- are one and at peace. Here are some simple ways to take care of the well being of yourself and your family. Start with one and incorporate more into your way of living at a pace that fits your needs.

  1. Eat more raw foods. Science has proven that heat kills beneficial enzymes in food. Science also proves that heat changes foods into free-radicals that can destroy our health.
  2. At the very least, choose organic produce and dairy. Ideally, choose all certified organic foods.
  3. Cut down on (or completely cut out) meat products. Meat is hard for the body to break down and absorb and there are many easy ways to incorporate protein into your diet. It is not necessary to eat meat.
  4. Ditch the tap water. Tap water contains fluoride which is not proven to benefit us, is known to cause dental problems and is a environmental waste product. Water also contains other contaminants and traces of medications. PS: Not all bottled water is fluoride/contaminant free. Do your research and read water quality reports.
  5. Walk. Easy and so good for your body, mind and soul. Keeps stress down. Lubricates joints.
  6. Check out your health and beauty product ratings at Skin Deep. Know if your cosmetics are toxic to your body and what ingredients you’re really exposing yourself to. You might just want to make a change…
  7. Meditate. Relax. De-stress. Be one with yourself.
  8. Drink organic coffee and drink less coffee altogether. Coffee is some of the most heavily sprayed crop (pesticides).
  9. Drink coconut water. It’s all-natural and is said to add years to your life!
  10. Take your vitamins. Don’t forget extra vitamin D for immune health and to fight sickness. Here is a fact sheet on vitamin D3. I’ve read articles that state when you feel sickness coming on, you can take between 25,000 and 50,000 IU’s (depending on your body weight) of vitamin D.
  11. Cut out non-organic soy products. Somewhere around 80+% of soy in America is genetically modified.
  12. Antibiotics are given out like candy these days and make resistant strains of infections because our body is so pumped full of them by the medications, as well as the meat and dairy we eat and the soap we use. If you MUST take an antibiotic, take a probiotic as well. Children can eat yogurt with live cultures.
  13. Google the term “superfoods” and choose one to start consuming. Gradually work your way up to as many as you can.
  14. Feeling depressed? High doses of niacin can help!
  15. Choose non-toxic candles. Your candles may cause cancer over time among other health ailments. Check out this article for some great information on how and why to choose non-toxic candles.
  16. Eat more broccoli– it lowers your chance of cancer and slows the effects of/prevents arthritis.
  17. Read food labels: if you don’t know what it is or can’t pronounce it, our bodies weren’t made to process it. Don’t eat it.
  18. Have a positive outlook. When something not-so-great happens to you, ask yourself what good can come of it and remember that ‘this too shall pass’. Positive thinking brings positive outcomes.
  19. When you get sick, instead of calling the Doctor, look for a natural/homeopathic solution online or in a book. Also, if you have access to breast milk, it can sure anything from pink eye to a bug bite. Check it out!
  20. Switch out all plastics in your kitchen to glass, stainless steel or stoneware. Cut out Teflon coating as well. It’s a carcinogen.
  21. Switch to a non-PVC shower curtain. PVC shower curtains fill your entire home with toxic air pollutants that you and your family constantly breathe in.
  22. Buy vintage or organic/green furniture and organic/green mattresses. The amounts of toxins in modern-day furnishings is disgusting.
  23. Turn the TV and computer off. Have screen-free days every week, at least!
  24. Grown your own herbs and veggies. Yum 🙂
  25. Get the microwave out of the house. Replace with a toaster oven if you so desire. Your microwave changes the structure of foods into something your body cannot properly absorb and/or recognize. Microwaved food may cause cancer/tumors and it destroys molecular properties and nutrients of foods. See more on this here. Anything you can do in a microwave you can to on the stove, in the oven or with a toaster oven.

Never stop looking for ways to live more naturally/organically. It’s a life-long journey to be healthy and live naturally, and it’s worth it!


How to incorporate natural living into our everyday lives November 11, 2010

When I first decided I wanted to stop putting toxins into my body and decided that I wanted my family to start eating better and living organically, my attempts failed. Why? It is human nature to want all or nothing. We decide we either want it all, or none at all. Usually, it takes some self compromise to reach a point where it’s a little of and a little without, even if it’s only temporary until we reach our true goals.

So in the beginning I decide, around a month into my pregnancy, that I don’t want to live the way I am living any longer. I don’t want the fast food, I don’t want the plastics, I don’t want the pesticides. I want organic foods, natural products and better health! There’s nothing wrong with these goals, but when I made them, I wanted them all. Right now. So, I went to Fred Meyer and perused the organic living section. I bought natural and organic household products,  organic beauty products and organic foods I had never tried. Big mistake. I spent a ton of money that day- some on products that didn’t work and some on products that I didn’t like.

Where do I start?

  1. Research. Decide what’s best for your family. Read articles and blogs about natural living and natural health. Decide what you want to change. Make a list of the changes you want to accomplish over time. This will save you time, money and hassle. Read reviews on products before you buy them.
  2. Go for it. But not for all of it! If you want to stop eating meat, start eating more raw foods and nuts, stop using chemicals in your home, start drinking fluoride free water, etc., start with something easy. Start with water. Once you no longer drink from the tap and it’s become second nature to drink filtered, start incorporating raw foods into your day/meals. Once your family becomes accustomed to raw foods, cut back on meat before finally cutting it out. You get the picture. These gradual changes make it so much easier to stick to your goals.
  3. Always strive to do better. This is not to say that you’re doing something wrong, but just having this outlook as a whole will help you live naturally easier. If you shut your mind down to new ideas once you’ve reached all of your goals, you’re living naturally and it’s a comfortable place for you, you might be missing out on some wonderful ideas and new developments. There are new discoveries all the time in regards to living organically and in a healthier environment.

What are some ways we can incorporate natural living into our everyday lives?

  • Water. Have you researched what’s in your tap water? We are all told fluoride is good for our dental health, but should we accept that statement and the fact that it’s in most of our drinking water and the more water we drink the more fluoride we ingest? This is a great place to start. We can live without food for around a couple of weeks but we can only live without water for a few days. It’s a very important component of our health and longevity!
  • Cut fast food. Period. Research the ingredients, hormones and preservatives that are in fast food. Cloned meat, fruits and veggies loaded with pesticides and cheap ground up parts that are bleached, smashed into patties of ‘meat’ and redyed/fried for your pleasure… to name a few.
  • Eat organic fruits and veggies. This is a no-compromise zone for me. After researching the pesticides used and the effects on the human body, I only purchase fresh, organic produce.
  • Drink organic milk. I’ve drastically cut down on my personal milk consumption to almost none, but when I do drink milk it’s only organic. Same goes for my family. No growth hormones for us.
  • Change a beauty product or two. There is an awesome site called Skin Deep, where you can look up beauty products that you’re using. They have ratings of toxicity on each product (a rating of zero being the best) and ingredients so you know what you’re putting into your body.
  • Switch to organic baby/children’s shampoos/care items. Johnson & Johnson and Equate (Walmart’s brand) are/were recently in litigation because they knowingly used banned chemicals in their products. Probably simply because it was a little cheaper. This is the way big, mainstream companies think.
  • Continue working on your goals. Never stop working toward the life that you want for yourself and your family!

Small and simple steps can change your life and health in ways you never thought possible. Heart disease (the number one killer in the US) can be something you never have to worry about, cancer can be prevented and defeated and diabetes can be reversed. And this is only the beginning.
